The President’s Corner – Robin Dozier Otten
imageTo anyone who has felt the coolness of the air in the early morning this last week, it is no secret that fall, or at least New Mexico’s version of autumn, has arrived. The long Labor Day weekend marks the emotional end of summer and the real beginning of the annual routines ingrained in us as school children. As I mentioned in this column last month, the members of NAWBO-NNM’s Board of Directors have been busy all through the summer making plans to offer an exciting year of interesting and beneficial opportunities for you and your businesses.

You may have noticed that our meetings this summer have attracted many guests and potential new members. We are working hard to make this happen by using new venues to get the word out that NAWBO is THE organization that women business owners must join. We’re convinced that the personal touch, either a phone call or an in-person invitation, pays the best dividends. Please join this effort and bring someone who you think would benefit from membership with you to one of our meetings.

In addition to our three monthly Satellite meetings and stimulating committee meetings that many of us enjoy (contact any member of the board if you would like to get more involved), our general meetings are a terrific chance to see one another and to learn valuable business tips. In August, our speaker, Matt Rix, was both entertaining and informative as he spoke to us about how we can make our business presentations more effective. Merri Jean Jones, Economic Development Director, spoke about the huge positive impact that our Corporate Partners make on our organization and encouraged all of us to let them know how much we appreciate them. Our Member Services Director, Donna Luke, reminded us of the availability of Spotlight Tables to inform other members about our businesses.

As we prepare for this November’s election when we will choose the first woman Governor of New Mexico, many state-wide officers and the entire House of Representatives, both state and federal, our September meeting speaker will be Mayor Richard J. Berry. Mayor Berry will tell us about his decision, as a successful business owner, to enter the field of public service and how he thinks the arena of politics and business intersect. We hope you, and your guests, will join us on September 15th.

Once again, please remember that this is your organization and we want to hear from you. Together we can fulfill our tremendous potential.
