The President’s Corner – Debbie Steg
Back to School

When I was growing up, September was always an exciting month. It was time to go back to school and all the exiting things that came with that change. This was the time to catch up with old friends and see what they had been up to for the summer. Who had gotten a great haircut, had an amazing summer crush, or even had a summer job that inspired them to decide what they wanted to be when they grew up. Back then, growing up seemed to be a destination out in the future, when everything would finally be perfectly laid out as if in some carefully crafted tableau. I now know that the growing up is an ongoing process and one that can truly enrich our lives.

And yet, even now when September rolls around, I still find some of that same new giddy excitement to catch up with friends and colleagues and find out what adventures summer brought to their door. I’d love to hear what summer adventures enriched your life!

As for my summer adventures, I feel blessed to say that this summer brought some wonderful and memorable experiences my way. I got to connect with some brilliant business women at the NAWBO National Conference in Chicago and if you’ve following on Agoura, I’ve been sharing resources from that conference I think you may find of interest. I had the pleasure of having a family beach vacation where I turned all electronics off (gasp!). I highly recommend the electronics vacation. There’s nothing better to fuel creativity. I came back from that trip feeling inspired and invigorated with new ideas. And like back to school time, at NAWBO-NNM we have some new fall changes that I’m excited to share with you. Our new pre-meeting class is an opportunity to cultivate your knowledge as a business owner. This is a members only benefit. The first class in August was free. The tuition for this exciting new offering going forward is $10 per session for the first 15 members who RSVP that month. Each month we’ll have a topic that will enhance your knowledge in a different aspect of the business arena.

Also, our committees will be sharing information with you in the newsletter, informing you of what they’re working on or what is new. I hope you’ll be inspired to join a committee if you are not already serving on one.

And continuing on our theme “Financial Possibilities – Financial Opportunities,” this month our speaker Maine Shafer will be addressing tax strategies and showing you where the opportunities are to reduce your taxes. Hopefully you will come away with strategies that will help you approach taxes with more serenity.

Tax Strategies for Self-Employed Business Women:
How to Turn Tax Dollars Back into Your Dollars

image

According to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, you could have overpaid your taxes last year. Many of us use accountants to take care of our taxes but forget that we give them the numbers and records they use to prepare our tax return.

At our September meeting, Maine Shafer will identify between $2,500 and $27,500 in new, legal tax deductions that we can use right away to pocket thousands in tax savings. Join us and learn how to create financial possibilities and financial opportunities for your business.

He will discuss what taxes really cost you regardless of your income and will give us ways to reduce our taxes including:

  • How to safely transform 50% entertainment deductions into 100% deductions
  • Documentation tips that will save you time, all the time
  • Two remarkable entertainment deductions available to self-employed business women that may surprise you
  • How you can help your accountant work more effectively on your behalf
  • How to use the tax side of your business to increase your spendable income
  • How to reduce your chances of being audited

Get all the details and RSVP here.

What is International Forum?
International Forum (IF) of NAWBO NNM mirrors a similar forum at NAWBO National. Goals at both levels are similar: International Forum of NAWBO NNM seeks to enhance the wealth-creating capacity of NAWBO NNM’s members through the exploration of opportunities in the global marketplace.

  • Seek to expand member awareness of opportunities that exist in the global marketplace for building relationships and expanding trade.
  • Support strategic alliances with international organizations whose mission and goals are aligned with NAWBO’s.
  • Explore access to expertise/know-how by networking with international partners
  • Identify opportunities for members to take leadership roles in the international business community
  • Help facilitate member access to capital and other resources

Our NAWBO NNM International Forum would like to attract your attention, develop your interest in getting you involved in activities that offer an increase in financial possibilities and opportunities. So―

  • IF you would like to strengthen your wealth creating capacity
  • IF you would like to be part of creative, innovative and effective change in your business culture
  • IF you would you like to build strategic alliances, coalitions and affiliations―

Let the goals of International Forum be a part of your business strategy. The goals of International Forum are in line with this year’s NAWBO NNM goals of building financial opportunities and possibilities.

Through International Forum, NAWBO National, our parent organization, provides resources we can tap into to further our goals. One such resource is the World Association of Women Entrepreneurs, Les Femmes Chefs d’Entrepreneurs Mondiales, a non-profit, non-governmental, non-political and non-sectarian organization whose activities at the national and international levels are aimed at promoting women’s entrepreneurial initiatives and reinforcing national associations of women business owners. FCEM’s 57th World Congress takes place in Yaounde, Cameroon October 2, 2009.
Resources and opportunities are not limited to those provided by NAWBO National and don’t all lie beyond the borders of our country, state, county, or city. The International Festival in celebration of the International District takes place September 19, right here in our city at the Talin International Market. For more information, call Steve Whitman, Executive Director, STEPS at 505-306-3942.
Watch this space and Agora every month for more information on IF. This is just the beginning.
