The President’s Corner – Robin Dozier Otten
imageWe have bid farewell to the State Fair for another year and will very soon welcome thousands of visitors who will participate in the International Balloon Fiesta. This year we expect about 500 balloons and 650 pilots who promise to give us a spectacular show while bringing $106 million in direct spending. Businesses in Albuquerque, Santa Fe and surrounding communities will profit to the tune of about $145 million from indirect spending by our 765,000 visitors and I hope some of those businesses are yours!

Those of you who attended our September meeting were treated to an up-close-and-personal story from Albuquerque’s Mayor Richard J. Berry about why a successful businessperson chose to leave private life for public service. We were excited that we had seventy members and guests in attendance to hear the mayor. And on the subject of public service, don’t forget that October 5th is the deadline for registration to vote in November 2’s very important election. I urge you to encourage your family members, employees, friends and neighbors to register and vote.

In October, in addition to our three monthly Satellite meetings and various committee meetings that you may be interested in joining, our general meeting on the 20th will feature Dr. Lowell Catlett. Dr. Catlett is an exciting futurist who will let us in on two trends that are changing everything. Once again, we are offering you the opportunity to bring a guest at the same price as members—$32. The registration deadline at that rate is 5 p.m. on Friday, October 15th.

Our Member Services Director, Donna Luke, has announced a membership drive to be conducted throughout October and November. It will feature a $25 reduction in national dues during the drive, so please encourage others you’d like to see as NAWBO members to consider joining during the next two months.

Finally, I ask you to let members of your board of directors hear your ideas for increasing our organization’s positive impact on you and your business. We want our vision statement to be more than mere words. We will work hard to propel women entrepreneurs into economic, social and political spheres of power worldwide!
