The President’s Corner

Now that the Embassy Suites is beginning to feel like home, remember that we may move the dining room from month to month. If at all possible, the hotel will assign us to La Ventana room, behind the bar and to the right of the lobby area. However, we agreed to use a different room if it suited our reservation numbers better. We will notify you on the web site which room we are assigned to for each meeting. Then you can plan your parking (and your drink orders) accordingly.
Last Friday I had the privilege of representing NAWBO at the Celebration of Women, held at the New Mexico State Fair. Denise Baker, our Director of Youth Development and Community Outreach set up our booth and along with a number of members took turns “manning” the exhibit. (Will someone please come up with another word for manning that applies to women?) NAWBO thanks goes to Denise, DJ Heckes and her staff member and Joan Archibeque for donating their time and skills to recruiting new members and informing the community about NAWBO.
Speaking of Denise Baker, she fulfilled a goal of her committee when she invited 2 students and their principal and assistant principal, Kathy Sandoval and Polly Azar, to attend last month’s meeting. The students, Olivia Regensberg and Maria Rodriguez attend Albuquerque High School as well as the Career Enrichment Center and expressed great interest in entering the business world in the near future. We will continue to have students visit our meetings, in order to introduce budding entrepreneurs to our business community and to show them how we network with each other. Please welcome these young ladies as they visit and make them feel comfortable interacting with our seasoned business owners. If any of you could offer one of these ladies an opportunity to intern in your business or even a job-shadowing day, please notify Denise. This is a great opportunity for NAWBO members to reach out to the community and give back by illustrating how a business works on a daily basis, instead of how textbooks say they should work.
Barbara Dawson and her Membership Committee are working hard on a Buddy Program for new members. Beginning next month, each new member who wants to participate will be assigned a long-time member as her official BUDDY. Each BUDDY will sit with the new member at the meeting, introduce her to other members, check on her during the month, answer any questions about NAWBO or refer her to someone who can, and generally make that new member feel welcome. We are so large, now that it is very intimidating for new members to come into a group of 100+ members and be able to break into a conversation. I have a hard enough time getting your attention at the meetings and I have a microphone! Sign up now to either be a BUDDY or be assigned one.
We are trying some new offerings and are expanding some tried and true offerings.
I hope that our members are feeling excited and pleased with the programs and events we have scheduled this fiscal year. We are trying some new offerings (Toastmasters, special interest groups, BUDDY program) and are expanding some tried and true offerings (MasterMind groups, Public Policy informational programs and programs focused on our members). If you have a suggestion or comment, please feel free to contact me or any of the Board members. We could use a few more committee members. Let me know if you are interested and I’ll connect you with a chairperson.
I won’t see you at the next meeting (October 19). I’m going to help my granddaughter and her family celebrate her fourth birthday in Columbus, Ohio. Sandy Cody will be directing the meeting, a trial run for her for next year when she will be in charge. Be kind to her so we don’t scare her away from the office of President. She is a great leader who will further improve NAWBO and its services for all our members.
Take Care – — Mary Lou Christophersen

CHAPTER WEB SITE/AGORA TRAINING AT OCTOBER MEETING
Sorry to those that came early to our September dinner meeting for the web site training. Unfortunately, we were unable to connect to the Internet. We have worked out the details with the Embassy Suites, and will be holding the Agora/Web Site training during the 5:30-6:30 social hour at the October meeting. We will be providing support for Members Area login procedures, posting messages on the Agora, and navigating the web site. Please come to the lobby and look for the Member Communications Committee’s Amy Zampella and Nancy Ullery with their laptops. Thanks!
