Financial Possibilities – Financial Opportunities

This is our theme and my vision for our NAWBO chapter this year. When starting a journey it’s important to know where you’re going, so that at the end you’ll know if you’ve gotten there. In fact, as I sat at the NAWBO National Conference listening to Peter Walsh, Oprah’s Clutter Expert, he reinforced that very same point. He said that the most important thing to start with is to have a vision for your life. To start with the end goal in mind. Do you have a vision for your life? Do you have a vision for your business? What Peter said next was simple, yet genius – clutter is anything that gets between you and the life you want to be living. And it’s so true.

I remember when I was living in New York in my tiny first apartment and hired an organizer to help me clean out my clutter because the feng shui practitioner I had hired refused to do any work until the clutter had been cleared. At first I was annoyed that my feng shui practitioner had given me this requirement, but what a gift it turned out to be. Over the next couple of weeks bags and bags of “stuff” in large garbage bags were leaving this tiny apartment. I was amazed at how must “stuff” I had accumulated and stored in such a tiny space in a few years. No wonder I was having trouble finding my dream apartment, the energy of all this “stuff” was keeping me stuck. When the last bag had been disposed of, my feng shui practitioner came in and did her magic. Filled with all this energy , both physically and mentally, I did everything she recommended. Two weeks later, my dream apartment showed up. Literally. The super in my building told me about the apartment as it was being renovated. He told about a top floor apartment with a large outdoor patio and unobstructed view before it even went on the market. In New York City! I saw it before anyone else and it was mine before the paint was dry on the walls. And that was just the beginning. My new business started to take off and I felt emotionally lighted than I’d felt in years.

You see, as Peter pointed out, clutter sucks the life out of you and robs you of what’s important in your life. So what financial clutter are you holding on to? What financial beliefs are keeping you from having the business and life you want? What stuff are you holding on to just in case? Are you willing to let go of those things that stand between you and your vision? When you release the “stuff” you create space for the possibilities and opportunities.

As we go through this year, all of the decisions the board and I will be making this year, we’re going to ask the question – Is it creating financial possibilities and financial opportunities? Is the decision in alignment with our vision?

I’m excited as we begin our journey this year. And I have so much more wonderful information I will be sharing with you from the NAWBO national conference as we embark on this exciting year, brimming full of possibilities and opportunities.

Prosperity blessings,

Platinum Profile – Robin Otten
image
ROBIN OTTEN
President, CEO
RDO Strategic Consultants, LLC
Public Affairs & Government Relations

Robin loves politics. Politics is her business, her hobby, her passion. With a background as a lawyer, she has run for political office and has been in the Governor’s cabinet as the Secretary for Human Services, the chief welfare department for entitlements such as Medicaid and Child Support.

Currently, she is President and CEO of RDO Strategic Consultants, LLC, a public affairs and government relations consulting firm. Robin considers being able to work with The New Mexico Prosperity Project on issues about which she is most passionate, including Healthcare, and Taxation, and having the flexibility for non-profit work in the political arena, like NAWBO, WIPP (Women Impacting Public Policy), and the NM Ethics Alliance, to be the best things about her job. Her involvement in NAWBO enables her to talk with people in business about their concerns and to inform us of the importance of public policy. Her commitment is demonstrated by her appointment as Chair of the National NAWBO PAC (Political Action Committee) (check out their website to see what this committee does for us).

It doesn’t end there. When asked about her hobbies, her response was “…going to meetings, speaking to groups, and researching an issue…” (about what? …politics, of course) especially regarding cap and trade legislation, immigration, and employee issues. For her, involvement in politics is of utmost importance, as reflected in a quote from Terry Neese, co-founder of WIPP, that she embraces: “if you run a business and are not involved in politics, then politics will run your business”. (It is possible that replacing the word “business” with “life” would be just as appropriate.)

Yet, with all that she has done, she considers her greatest achievement to be her children. Robin has two daughters, each of whom has two daughters. One of her daughters is a fundraiser for the University of Colorado Health Sciences and the other is an M.D. at UNM Children’s Hospital.

Robin is looking forward to the New Year with NAWBO and working with the new President and Board. We are looking forward to her continued support and tireless work on our behalf. Thank you, Robin!

Public Policy Committee
The baton was officially passed to me last week by Celia to chair the Public Policy Committee for the coming year. Thank you Celia for everything! Please mark your monthly calendars starting July 22nd (and going forward, the fourth Wednesday of every month) at 7:30 am to meet at Perennials for breakfast (meeting starts at 7:45 am). This first meeting will be held to talk about plans for the new year. As a committee, we’ve been on a great track the last several years.

I think that every few years or so it’s good to reevaluate where things stand and decide what we want to keep doing and what we want to change. Everything is on the table to discuss. Do we want to continue Speak Out? Do we want to continue Business Day in Santa Fe? Do we want our focus to continue to be on State issues or should we focus on Federal ones? I know that a lot people think these are good things to continue and I’m not saying they are not. I just think we should put everything on the table and discuss it.

I want everyone to attend! If you attend no other meeting this year, please come to this one. It’s sure to be lively and opinionated, with great spirited discussion on the future direction of the NAWBO public policy committee. Please come help us chart our future.
