The President’s Corner – Robin Dozier Otten

February, so far, has left me breathless! Not only record-breaking cold, but also the first steps in a community project that I believe will make our city an even more hospitable place for all of us to live and do business: Albuquerque Heading Home. I’d love to tell you more about it when we see one another.

Business Day in Santa Fe was amazing. NAWBO-NM was well represented by a lovely booth and many members of the Public Policy committee helped spread the word about our organization. The ACI breakfast the following morning was informative as we heard from the legislative leadership of both houses and both parties as well as Governor Martinez’ Chief-of-Staff, Keith Gardner. But the most exciting part of the day, at least for me, and I hope for our entire organization, was having Governor Martinez as our luncheon speaker. Her story of how her parents worked such long hours to support their family while building a business that eventually employed 125 people was inspiring. She impressed upon us that she understands the struggles of entrepreneurs and the ways that government can either minimize the challenges or aggravate them. Our meeting attendance was almost 150 members and guests, more than twice our usual numbers. I’ve heard that those who rode the bus to Santa Fe had a marvelous time together.

This month we’ll learn about “Guerrilla Publicity” from Jill Lublin, a master publicity strategist and nationally acclaimed speaker. The meeting is on February 16th beginning at 5:30pm at the Embassy Suites. I hope to see you there!

Please keep in mind that our nominations chairman, Mary Rutland, is on the look-out for “a few good women” to serve as officers and directors of our chapter beginning in July. Be sure to let Mary know if you are interested in serving or if you know of someone who is.

LIFE, ENERGY and SUSTAINABILITY. I am passionate about design. So, what do these three words have to do with design? Design, at its roots, is problem solving. And that is what I do, problem solve. Whether in my clients’ offices or in their homes, I create designs that reflect the richness of the LIFE that happens there; designs filled with unique ENERGY generated from an understanding of client needs and dreams and that have SUSTAINABILITY because they are based on support for the specific “functions” that are the realities of people’s lives and energy!

Studio J Interiors, Inc. was founded in 1994 with the mission of providing a full range of interior design services. I am a sole practitioner, but I have assembled a team of professional specialists who help me realize my clients’ dreams.

These are challenging times – technology changes in the blink of an eye and fashion trends carry us along on an ocean of change. With competition challenging us on every front, we want our homes and work environments to reflect who we are, what we do and the professionalism that we provide. Maintaining updated spaces that support our lives and our values may not require a new space—just a new perspective!

Someone recently asked me the secret of Studio J’s success. I believe the foundation for our success is that “Cookie Cutter” design is not in our vocabulary. Design solutions are never about me or Studio J—they are always about my clients!

I design with confidence because I listen carefully to my clients’ needs and desires. I provide high quality services by being responsive, creative, timely, and professional.

Quality Results from Quality People and Quality Resources

Resources for Excellence, Inc (R4E) founded in 1997 as a management consulting company is now the umbrella firm for two others…RM Draker and Associates (RMDA) a Canadian company founded in 1980 specializing in land use and urban development , and Adult Care Resources, LLC (ACR), a 2007 spinoff of R4E providing services to care providers for the elderly.

Like many business events, the coming together of these three diverse, yet similar, companies was serendipitous; each company was providing similar services to its clients.

In a brainstorming session we discovered the services, while customized to the client, had common features, assessing opportunities, process improvement, compliance and problem solving. For example, R4E was conducting focus groups while RMDA was conducting town hall meetings~~same skills sets, different task name. The brainstorming brought to light that if we were to share staff and resources, we would be more effective and efficient.

So what specific services do we provide? WE…

  • Facilitate business and strategic planning and assist in preparing the implementation process. After all, a plan is of little use unless you implement it!
  • Audit policies, procedures and records to insure our client meets the conditions of their industry; we then assist them in a process improvement plan.
  • Manage change through comprehensive project management processes.
  • Provide human resource consultation including, review and write job descriptions, handbooks, benefits and compensation plans.

The collaboration between the three companies has proven effective and efficient; we have added expertise and services without adding staff and our clients benefit from the additional services from a known entity they have come to trust.

If you would like more information about our companies call Sandy Cody at 323-1415 or her cell at 459-6859.

Senate votes to repeal 1099 requirement in Health Care bill
On February 3, the U.S. Senate voted to repeal a provision of the Health Care bill passed last year. The provision would have required businesses to file Form 1099 with the Internal Revenue Service for each vendor from whom they purchased more than $600 worth of goods or services in a year. It would have taken effect in 2012. Efforts to repeal this provision have been ongoing for months because of the administrative burden it would have placed on businesses.

ATTENTION! ATTENTION! BOARD MEMBERS WANTED FOR 2011 !!

NAWBO NNM is looking for Board Members for the year June 2011 to June 2012
.
If you are interested in becoming a Board Member, please contact Mary Rutland at 480-2398 or email Mary

The openings for the new Board under the President Debbie Maestas -Traynor are as follows:

Secretary
The Secretary keeps the minutes of the meetings and distributes them accordingly.

Public Policy
The Public Policy Committee is the link between NAWBO National and our chapter. It provides many opportunities for members to become active participants in molding the small business climate of New Mexico and the nation. This committee also keeps members informed of the public policy issues we should be aware of on both the national and state levels and fosters positive change for women-owned businesses through education, grassroots efforts, coalition with other business groups and advocacy by members. The National and Chapter Public Policy Committees are non-partisan; we support legislation and legislators that are dedicated to small businesses, including minority- and women-owned businesses. Public Policy organizes the annual Speak Out, Santa Fe Business Days, and is a liaison to the NAWBO Public Action Committee (PAC)

Finance (Sandie Lowenthal will continue as Bookkeeper)
Finance develops and implements the chapter’s financial policies and procedures. The Finance Committee (headed by Finance Director) encourages members with or without a financial background and those who want to learn about the financial world are welcome. This committee also gives members an opportunity to meet other chapter members; Finance Committee members are the friendly faces members and guests see when they check in for the monthly meetings.

Education & Leadership
The Education & Leadership Committee encompass the subcommittees of Programs & Spotlight Tables, Education, and Facilities & Bar Sponsors.
The Facilities Subcommittee coordinates our monthly meeting location and arranges any equipment and/or special needs for our speakers.
Programs & Spotlight Tables Subcommittee work together to develop ideas to make our monthly dinner meetings productive, entertaining and a great value to our members. From selecting topics and speakers, to coordinating travel and hospitality considerations for presenters, to purchasing speaker gifts, the Programs Subcommittee is at the heart of every meeting.
The Programs Subcommittee also organizes the monthly member spotlights. The member spotlight is a unique and beneficial opportunity for member businesses to get the word out about their products and services. Members who reserve a member spotlight will receive a six-foot display table and 60 seconds in the spotlight to present their message at a monthly meeting.

Economic Development
This is a multi-focused committee. One area will be fundraising for the chapter through Corporate Partners and Platinum Members. The other focus is Procurement (matching women businesses with major corporate and government contracts) and Capital (matching women-owned businesses with sources of capital to help them grow).

FEE Liaison
This individual meets with the FEE Board and reports to the NAWBO Board regarding activities and assists in coordinating with NAWBO as needed.

NAWBO wants to celebrate your wins!
