The President’s Corner – Mary Rutland
The NAWBO-NNM Board Retreat was held at the Norbertine Community Retreat in mid July. Only two members were unable to attend at least part of the retreat. So – considering our hectic schedules and that it was summer and vacations – it was an excellent number. And we worked hard!
The Mission of our organization is as is stated in the newly adopted by-laws. We decided not to change it as it would require changing the by-laws and are pleased with it as it is.
NAWBO’s vision is to propel women entrepreneurs into economic, social and political spheres of power worldwide.
NAWBO’s mission is to:
- Strengthen the wealth-creating capacity of NAWBO’s members and promote economic development;
- Create innovative and effective changes in the business culture;
- Build strategic alliances, coalitions, and affiliations; and
- Transform public policy and influence opinion–makers.
we came up with several goals
That being done, we moved on to our goals and objectives. With Robin Johnstone’s great leadership as our facilitator, we came up with several goals for the next six months and then several for the year. We also discussed five year goals. Each Director will be sharing these goals with their committees and we will be moving forward with direction and purpose.
You have a dynamic board and the cohesiveness that was established at the retreat will enable us to work and communicate very effectively this year. Stay tuned! (And JUST IMAGINE the changes and accomplishments we can all do this year…)

Platinum Profile – Angie Thurman
Talk about staying power – Angie Thurman has been with Premier Designs Jewelry for 15 years now. The company is 22 years old, so she’s really grown up with the business. Currently at the Two Diamond level, Angie is very close to attaining the coveted Three Diamond level. A total of 100 happy distributors reside in her sales group, of all ages and walks of life.
Premier Designs Jewelry is a “pure” direct sales company with 26,000 distributors, offering a dynamic business without a huge initial investment. Did you know that Premier debuts new jewelry twice a year? Angie will attend the National Rally in Fort Worth, Texas the week of July 9th to preview the new lines and pick up her share of the products. It is estimated that 8,000 members will attend the rally and see what’s current in jewelry industry trends.
Angie recently stated “Premier is a company of integrity. They stand behind all their products with a manufacturer’s guarantee. Anyone with energy and a dream can make it in this business. One-third of the members weren’t even jewelry people when they started!”
Premier has allowed Angie to grow in ways she never knew possible. Public speaking is one of the areas that she used to be uncomfortable. By having NAWBO as a forum to experiment and learn, her public speaking has improved and her business has multiplied.
Angie says that she’ll be in this business forever, there’s no reason to ever retire – she’s just having too much fun. And the economic benefit never hurts either! The part of NAWBO’s mission statement that states “STRENGTHEN the wealth-creating capacity of our members”, definitely had great effect in Angie’s case.

National’s New Online Management System Getting Closer!
On September 1, national will launch the new NAWBO association management system (AMS). ACGI’s Association Anywhere AMS will replace NAWBO’s current database and web interface (iMIS and the e-Series, respectively).
ACGI was the chosen vendor because they understand the complexity of unifying information and integration between a national organization and its chapters and members. They have a proven track record of providing solutions to organizations with as few as 100 members to those with up to 1 million members.
Having been a part of the Technology Task Force, I can assure you that we set high standards for the new system to meet for both members and chapters, including (but not limited to):
- It must be easy and intuitive to use by those with minimal computer skills to those with advanced experience.
- It must update data in real time.
- It must enable members to download an accurate chapter directory.
- It must enable chapter leaders to create meaningful reports that help them fulfill their responsibilities.
- It must be capable of running in virtually any Web browser on PC, Macintosh, Linux, and UNIX computers.
Beta testing on the new system by members of the task force and other tech-savvy volunteers began last week, and we’re putting it through the ringer. Once we get to the self-service testing phase, those of you with limited computer experience who volunteered will have a chance to test it with your own record to see if our super-intuitive system is really as intuitive as we think it is!
Once the testing phase is completed, training Webinars and in-person training sessions will be scheduled before the go-live date to make sure that chapters and members will be ready and able to fully utilize all of the expanded and improved features of NAWBO’s new Association Anywhere system.
Thanks go again to the Technology Task Force, chaired by Candy Roberts of NAWBO Philadelphia, for their leadership throughout the selection and scoping process. And for their ongoing participation in the conversion process, special thanks to Vicki Tortorelli and Suzanne Harmony of NAWBO Orange County. Their countless hours of dedication will pave the way for a smooth transition into the new system.

Conference to Promote Opportunities for Veteran-owned Businesses
From the New Mexico Business Weekly Daily Update
A conference in late August will focus on the needs of service-disabled and veteran-owned small businesses.
The third annual conference takes place Aug. 30-31 at the Albuquerque Marriott Hotel and is sponsored by the New Mexico Department of Veterans Services, the U.S. Small Business Administration and the New Mexico Small Business Development Center Network.
John Garcia, secretary of the New Mexico Department of Veterans Services, says the conference is being held to promote Public Law 108-183, which mandates that 3 percent of all federal contracting go to service-disabled veteran-owned small business. The law applies to all federal contracting entities and prime contractors doing business with the federal government.
John C. Woosley, district director of the New Mexico Small Business Administration, says the event is an opportunity for veterans in business to attend workshops and panels, meet with buyers and subcontracting officers from federal agencies and large prime contractors, and learn about contracting and subcontracting opportunities.
The keynote speaker on Aug. 30 will be Steven C. Preston, administrator of the U.S. Small Business Administration. On Aug. 31, there will be a matchmaking session to introduce veteran business owners to buyers.
