Speaking Your Truth

It’s easy to get caught up filtering what we want to say based on what we think people want to hear. Each time we do we give away our power. The idea of speaking our truth can run counter to many cultural programs and beliefs we were taught growing up. Fill in the blank to this phrase – “Good girls don’t ___________________” – and you’ll get an idea of some of the hidden programs that may still be running in your subconscious and keeping your from truly stepping into your power. In fact, power can be a touchy subject for women, especially in business. It can seem to be in conflict with our feminine nature. Can we be both feminine and powerful? Or do we need to subvert our femininity in order to be powerful in the business arena? Part of the conflict lies in the fact that power is often confused with aggression. True power is that internal strength and knowing that radiates forth with confidence. The very traits that are considered more feminine or “right brain” – emotion and imagination – are traits that make us natural entrepreneurs.

When we acknowledge and own all of our gifts and recognize them as assets they really are, we start to reclaim our power. The myth is that our power is taken away from us when in fact no one can take away something unless we allow them. There is nothing more alluring than a woman that truly owns and radiates her power without guilt, remorse or fear. And yet that leap to reclaiming and owning our power can seem daunting at times, until we stop and recognize our innate power is a state of “being” and not “doing.” Our true power lies in acknowledging our intuitive and feminine traits, recognizing them as assets and using them with confidence in business. They are the uniqueness that draws clients and customers back to us over and over again.

It is from this point of power that speaking our truth comes more naturally. When we speak our truth from a place of power, we use our voice as a powerful change agent out in the world. The power of our voices is recognized by our legislators. Each year they show up in increasing numbers to get our perspective and to hear our truth. Our popular signature event this month is Speak Out. This is your opportunity use your powerful voice to let our legislators know what is important to you a business owner. With the economy and fiscal responsibility a key concern and since this is an election year, your voice is especially important. So bring your friends, colleagues and partners to our April dinner and see the power of your voice in action.

With love, gratitude and prosperity blessings,

International Forum – One Little Round Planet

Guest Article by International Forum Member Jan-Marie Esch
Email Jan-Marie

Discussion at the International Forum Committee meeting in February centered on the thought that we cannot afford to ignore the international community in which we live. While we see ourselves and our businesses as finite and local, the reality is that no matter what we do or what business we are in, our behavior and business impact more than we realize. Life itself on our little round planet is totally interconnected – ecosystems, economy, people, and in that sense our ‘global wellbeing’. What we do every day touches someone’s life, and their life touches others and like a pebble thrown into a pond, the concentric circles expand in all directions – that is us. Every day, we make a little splash in the pool of life and it eventually impacts everything else in some way.

It is easy for us to overlook the obvious connects, such as the worldwide web, because we take it for granted. Given how young the web is and its potential for instant information and global sharing, we often discount our responsibility for being part in the sharing. “I don’t go on the web that much” is sometimes the response to discussions of how we are really already international. But for those of us who have lived abroad or traveled to foreign countries, we become keenly aware of how blessed we are to live in a nation where women’s rights are protected by law, and we are seen as equals. Not everyone is so lucky.

There are many ways that we can contribute to the international community, starting with the awareness that we are already a part of it. The next step is finding ways that we can be more engaged and encouraging of development – it can be through our interest in the arts, literature, business, politics, or any other venue that we choose. It can be a small start such as donating to a worthy cause, or a more personal donation of time volunteering for an aid group – certainly there is plenty that needs to be done with all the earthquakes and disasters that are befalling us around the world.

We are indeed just one little planet, but if we summon our courage and energy, there is nothing that we cannot accomplish.

NAWBO Welcomes Disney Institute to Albuquerque on April 7th 2010

It doesn’t take any training to recognize that the world’s economy has taken a significant downturn. It does take effective and proven professional development training to guide impacted organizations back to the summit.

The National Association of Women Business Owners Northern New Mexico Chapter is proud to partner with The University of New Mexico, Division of Continuing Education to bring Disney’s Approach to Business Excellence program, presented by the world renowned Disney Institute, to the Albuquerque area on April 7, 2010.

Organizations from across the nation have learned proven philosophies and implemented effective processes to reap the rewards of improvements in leadership, management, service, and brand loyalty.

We invite your team to join thousands of professionals and discover Disney business secrets to …

  • Strengthening loyalty and retaining valuable customers
  • Expanding their brand and generating greater profits
