PUBLIC POLICY UPDATE
As the legislative session wound down in February, the NAWBO Public Policy committee was kept informed of bills that were passed and signed by the Governor. However, it’s always interesting to get an insider’s perspective on how things worked during the session. We were fortunate to have State Representative Paul Pacheco attend our March committee meeting. He gave us an overview of how the legislators worked together to get some key legislation passed - one of which was the One Stop Business Portal Act, which should assist businesses setting up in the State of New Mexico.
There continues to be some improvement on the gross receipts taxes for businesses. And, there continues to be an impasse on whether or not to continue issuing drivers licenses to undocumented immigrants. There was lively discussion by the committee members and an offer from the members of the Public Policy committee to assist Representative Pacheco on any business bills coming up in the future. He is a great resource for us and we want to return the favor by offering the vast knowledge and experience of our committee members. We want to thank Representative Pacheco for taking the time to meet with us.
Our next meeting will be April 23, 2014. Members are welcome to attend and bring someone who might be interested in seeing what NAWBO’s Public Policy committee is all about.
