About the Topic:
One of the toughest lessons every business leader learns is how hard it is to generate sustained growth. At some point in a company’s life cycle, stalled growth is the rule, not the exception—even for the best-managed organizations. That’s especially true in tumultuous economic environments such as the one we’re experiencing today. Unfortunately, most members of the C-suite rarely understand what’s really going on within their organizations, leading them to make ill-informed strategic choices and other decisions that exacerbate the problems they face.

Steve McKee has a unique understanding of what happens when growth stalls. Over the past decade, his firm has conducted significant research among thousands of corporations, many of which had at one time been among the country’s fastest-growing companies. McKee’s studies probe areas as diverse as corporate structure, competition, branding, finance and strategy, and have yielded fascinating lessons and hard-won perspectives from executives who have lived on the front lines of real-life growth crises.

In his insightful presentation McKee demonstrates that sluggish growth is generally produced not by mismanagement or strategic blundering, but by natural market forces and internal management dynamics that often go unrecognized.  He has identified seven characteristics that commonly correlate with stalled growth. Some are external forces to which countless companies have fallen victim; more surprising are four subtle and highly destructive internal factors that conspire to keep companies down.

McKee presents compelling knowledge about how and why companies lose their way, and offers practical advice about how they can rekindle growth—making the case that regardless of what’s going on outside of an enterprise, it’s what’s inside that counts.
