June President’s Letter

image Thanks to all responsible for a wonderful “Thank You” reception sponsored by the Embassy Suites Hotel and Spa.  This year we combined our tributes to our Corporate Partners and Platinum and Turquoise members with our annual Kudos Awards and Tough Cookie Award.  We honored The Loan Fund, Elizabeth Lucero, New Mexico Business Weekly, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Atkinson and Co., SynLawn, Embassy Suites, FastSigns on the Two, Sandia National Labs, Jobing.com, the Bank of the West and Wells Fargo Bank with vignettes about their businesses.  If you attended the meeting, we would appreciate your comments on this new format.

Our 2010-2011 Kudos Award winners are:  Supporter of the Year, Lynne Marcus;  Mentor of the Year, Sandy Cody; Advocate of the Year, Julie Epling; Public Policy Advocate of the Year, Jean Gibson; Rookie of the Year, Jeanie Springer, and Woman Business Owner of the Year, Yoshoda Naidoo.  Our Tough Cookie, awarded to a business person (member of NAWBO, or not) who has endured tough challenges and overcome them to achieve success in her or his business, is Edna Lopez, CEO of COMPA Industries, Inc.
In addition to voting to accept the changes to the NAWBO-NNM by-laws, the members of our chapter unanimously accepted the nominating committee’s slate of officers and directors for next year.  They are:  Debbie Maestas-Traynor, President; Merri Jean Jones, Vice-President and President-elect; Robin Dozier Otten, Immediate Past President, Lisa Obeji, Secretary, and Johanna Tighe, Treasurer.  The directors are: Communications, Barbara Kline; Economic Development, Carolyn Ward; Public Policy, Joan Schlueter; Education and Leadership, DJ Heckes; Member Services, Donna Luke; International, Kay Carrico; and Foundation for Entrepreneurial Excellence (FEE) Liaison, Lorie Guthrie.
On June 15th, we will install our new officers and directors.  This is always an exciting and inspiring meeting and I urge you to be there to thank those who are retiring from the board and to welcome the new president, Debbie Maestas-Traynor, and her in-coming board.
Finally, as I close this last of the president’s letters that I will write, I want to thank all of you for your part in making this a successful and enjoyable year for me and the current board.  This is indeed a remarkable organization made up of fantastic business women.  Thank you for the opportunity to participate in the leadership of our group.
I look forward to seeing you at our installation dinner at the Embassy Suites at 5:30pm on June 15th.
Robin Dozier Otten
